This is a very interesting articles that make us wonders about , "Are we designer?"
According to the article,
"Anyone that tries to improve a situation is a designer."
There are also interesting statements like,
"Design is not necessary about the look of a thing" of which I couldn't agree more.
For example, the Gustav Stickley's rocker given by Stickley during the writer's wedding day which has gave consciousness about the
"RAW POWER OF DESIGN".
I have found the picture of the rocker from another link so that we can figure out the "looks is not so important statement"

Yeah i do agree that the main desire of design is to solve problems and make the world a better place to live in.
However, about the looks of the product.. hmmm..
not important?
nah.. human is realistic. who doesn't want things that looks AWESOME?
therefore, here comes perfectness ^.^ -

erm...if u read the article carefully... written there is that look is not the most important thing, its just the second most important thing... the urge of design according to look is still there...its just that... when we cant even achieve the 1st value, so why do we bother about the second value?

haha... i think that human are concern about both function and beauty too just like choosing a life partner , normally is the outlook give you the first impression wheather to goes on or escape, important but if it have no function, later will be ignored too. so, it need the outlook to attract and functionable to maintain. both interdependent... either one lost , also cant!
nevertheless, the thinking of people would be changed from one stage to another...
